Neutering

Neutering or castrating involves the surgical removal of your pet’s testicles. Neutering should be done at around 6 months of age.

There are several benefits to having your pet neutered: the risk of prostatic problems are reduced, it can help with some behavioral problems such as urine marking and in some cases can decrease aggression, and it prevents unwanted puppies and kittens.

Spaying

A spay or ovariohysterectomy involves removing the females uterus and ovaries. This should be done at around 6 months of age, which is usually before the first heat cycle. It is preferred that your pet is not in heat or pregnant when being spayed. The uterus and ovaries at this time are much more vascular and the surgery is harder on your pet and the surgeon. If your pet is in heat, we may refuse to spay her if we feel there is any risk of severe hemorrhage (bleeding).

There are several benefits to spaying your pet: the risk of uterine infections is eliminated, she does not come into heat anymore, the risk of mammary tumors is reduced if done early, and unwanted puppies and kittens are prevented.

Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgeries are those involving bones, tendons or ligaments. There are a number of these that we do at the clinic, the most common being fracture stabilization and cruciate ligament repair/joint stabilization. Complicated repairs are usually referred to specialized orthopedic surgeons.

Exploratory Surgery

Many dogs seem to like to eat just about anything which in some cases get lodged in the stomach or intestines. Sometimes we are able to remove these objects with an endoscope, but if they are too big or cannot be reached, we must remove them with surgery.

Exploratory surgeries are also done in cases of chronic vomiting and diarrhea in order to see what the organs look like and in order to obtain biopsies.

They must also be done in order to remove bladder stones.
